What’s in a name??

We named our premium bluestone after the very old bluestone quarry in Harkaway. In fact this vein continued on to the adjoining suburb of Berwick. The bluestone quarry in Berwick (now closed and called Wilson Botanic Park) supplied mainly bluestone balast to the nearby train line, with a smaller amount supplied as pitchers to local government and domestic builders. The original Harkaway bluestone quarry is in fact still being quarried BUT only produces crushed bluestone for roadbase.

All About todays Harkaway Bluestone Pavers and Tiles
Harkaway Bluestone is one of Universal Quarries major products here in Australia.

We have stringent quality controls in place, even when selecting the block. To ensure that Harkaway Bluestone pavers and tiles meet the Australian standards for bluestone pavers and tiles.Cats paw or airholing is kept to a minimum of around 20%, whilst our “select,” grade is free of cats paw airholing (physically hand sorted out) for our concerning clients.Production time for no cats paw is of course longer.

Alas presently in the Australian market place we are seeing large volumes of inferior Chinese Basalt/Bluestone being sold. Sure its sold at bargain basement prices BUT are you the consumer made aware at the time of purchase of the following issues with inferior Chinese bluestone:

  1. Oxidisation will at sometime occur, especially when used as paving externally (exposed to the elements) or around a salt chloronated pool (deadly).
  2. Inferior Chinese bluestone has a more open pour (dotty look) and usually more cats paw. This leads to the inferior product being more porous and easily stained.
  3. Quality control is NON EXISTANT, pavers will be out of square and thickness will vary dramatically, mahking it very hard to intall and get flat.
